Using the arts and ‘awe’ to guide public policy
In a unique pairing between the U-M Ford School of Public Policy and U-M Museum of Art, students are learning how to develop human-centered experiences to guide public policy. This approach takes a step back from a traditional emphasis on economic growth and focuses on policies that prioritize human relationships, dignity and sustainability.

Harvest time
Phoenix Community Farm was founded in 2018 by Beth DeVries, a U-M alum who was working as a nurse practitioner in Midland. She realized that many people were not able to afford fresh fruits and vegetables. Knowing how much good health relies on good food, she decided to start a community garden.

Carbon emissions from forest soil
The soils of northern forests are key reservoirs that help keep the carbon dioxide that trees inhale and use for photosynthesis from making it back into the atmosphere. But a unique experiment led by Peter Reich of the University of Michigan is showing that, on a warming planet, more carbon is escaping the soil than is being added by plants.

The University of Michigan has ramped up its efforts to encourage them to vote in the 2024 presidential election. From making a personal voting plan and getting registered to engaging conversations centered around democracy and caring for oneself during potentially stressful weeks surrounding the election, below are a handful of programs that address the broad spectrum of democratic participation.
