Kid Frost

Kid Frost is a Mexican-American rapper born in East Los Angeles.  He spent segments of his childhood on military bases in Guam and Germany and began rapping in 1982, naming himself Kid Frost as a tribute to Ice T, who he often battled on the mic.  His earliest rap records came out on 12” on Electrobeat Records and Baja Records (20)

Kid Frost moved to Virgin records in the late 80s, releasing his most famous hit, “La Raza,” which focused on Mexican-American pride.  In 1990, Frost released his debut album, Hispanic Causing Panic, and established a Latin rap group called the Latin Alliance.  His second album, named East Side Story, was released in 1992 (21).

Frost dropped the “Kid” in front of his name in 1995 and was signed by Ruthless Records, releasing Smile Now Die Later.  His second record under Ruthless was titled When Hell.A. Freezes Over and was released in 1997.  Notable appearances on this album were Ice T, Scoop, O. Genius, and Domino (22)

Since then, Frost released This was Then This is Now Vol 1 in 1999, This was Then This is Now Vol II in 2000, Still Up in This Shit in 2002, Welcome to Frost Angeles, and Till the Wheels Fall Off in 2006 (23)

Frost imbued the track, “La Raza” with themes of Mexican-American pride.  Therefore, one of Frost’s most important messages is Mexican-American pride.  However, he was also greatly influenced by Gangsta rap and G-funk, and is considered a pioneer of hip-hop with Latin influences (24).
