IBM Home Page Reader (HPR)

HPR is an inexpensive and usable talking web browser. A 30-day demo can be downloaded (http://www-3.ibm.com/able/solution_offerings/hprtrial3.html). Unfortunately, the latest edition (HPR Version 3.021) only permits access to the IBM website, essentially eliminating its usefullness as a tool for evaluating accessibility. HPR has most of the functionality of JAWS or Window-Eyes. However, it pronounces letters phonetically in parenthesis, hence the need to insert periods or spaces after each letter if they need to be pronounced individually. Also, remember to switch on "Read Column Headers" and "Read Row Headers" in Settings>Miscellaneous if you are checking table headings.

To faciliate evaluation, review common HPR keyboard commands.

JAWS

Window-Eyes
