Purpose

This site was created to provide information about how to create accessible websites and web-based software, and to serve as a resource for web designers. The site contains many illustrations of accessible design, and its code can be used for reference since it meets Section 508 requirements and W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0. Code from the site is used in examples whenever possible.

It is important to note, however, that some questions and issues are not addressed in this site. If you have a specific question that isn't covered, please either contact me (melledge@umich.edu) or refer to one of these excellent publications:

  • "Constructing Accessible Web Sites," Jim Thatcher, et al, glasshaus, Ltd., Birmingham, UK, 2002
  • "Maximum Accessibility", John M. Slatin, Ph.D. and Sharron Rush, Addison-Wesley (Pearson Education, Inc.), Boston, MA, 2003
  • "The Flash Usability Guide," Chris MacGregor, et al, friends of ED, Birmingham, UK 2002
