Keyboard shortcuts for JAWS users in Internet Explorer Version 5.0 and above.

The following list contains common JAWS keyboard shortcuts for text, headings, links, frames, tables, forms, browser navigation and other commands. It should be helpful to a wide array of individuals and can be used as a quick reference guide. First, this guide will help JAWS users navigate within Internet Explorer. Second, this guide will be helpful to increase the awareness of Web content developers regarding keyboard shortcuts that would conflict with JAWS. Finally, programmers will find the keyboard commands typical for JAWS user a helpful reference.

Note: The configuration manager in the JAWS Set Options Manager enables users to customize how JAWS will read a variety of content formats, including accesskeys, abbreviations and acronyms, graphics and links.

Reads the text in the address bar

 

INS + TAB

Reads the selected link

  CTRL + Home Goes to beginning of page
 

CTRL + INS + Down Arrow

Reads the text within the current screen

 

CTRL + PgDown

Reads the text within the next screen

 

CTRL + PgUp

Reads the text within the previous screen

 

INS + Up Arrow

Say line, i.e. Reads the line at the active cursor

 

INS + Down Arrow

Say all, i.e. reads till the end of the page from where the cursor is located

 

INS + Left Arrow

Say prior word, i.e. reads the prior word from the cursor and detects selection context.

 

INS + Right Arrow

Say next word, i.e. reads the next word from the cursor and detects selection context.

 

INS + NUM PAD 5

Say word, i.e. reads the word at the active cursor

 

INS + NUM PAD 5 twice, quickly.

Spells the word out at the active cursor.

INS + F6 Lists headings on page
ALT + (number) Displays headings at that level, i.e. "Heading Level 1," "Heading Level 2," and so on
H To move to next heading
SHFT + H To move to next heading

INS + F7

Brings up a list of links within the page

TAB

To jump from one link to the next link

 

SHFT + TAB

To jump from one link to the previous link

Frames

INS + F9

Brings up a list of frames that are present within the page

 

CTRL + TAB

To move from one frame to the next frame within the page.

 

CTRL + SHFT + TAB

To move from one frame to the previous frame within the page.

Tables T Move to next table in page
  ALT + CTRL + Enter Move to next table in page

 

CTRL + ALT + (Left or Right Arrows)

Reads the item within a cell in the table, and also indicates which row or column the curser is on.

ENTER

To activate Forms mode, i.e. to activate text box, list box, combo box. (Note:æMake sure that you tab into the box that you want to activate before you hit ENTER)

  CTRL + INS + Tab Move to next form field
  CTRL + INS + Shift + Tab Move to previous form field
  CTRL + INS + End Move to last form field

CTRL + N

Opens a new window within the browser

 

INS + A twice, quickly

Moves JAWS cursor to the address bar

 

ALT + D

To activate the address list box

 

ALT + left Arrow

To go back one page within the browser

 

ALT + Right Arrow

To go forward one page within the browser

 

INS + ENTER

To skip past headers within a page

Moves to the next block of text which has no links

CTRL + F

To search for a word or a phrase (i.e., Find)

 

INS + ESCAPE

Refresh Screen, i.e. repaints all the currently displayed items on the screen

 

INS + F5

Reformat documents, i.e. reformats multiple column pages to be more readable with speech.

It has been supplemented by Michael Elledge of the University of Michigan.
