Michigan Rowing and Girls on the Run

Michigan Rowing is glad to be working with Girls on the Run of Southeastern Michigan, an organization that encourages healthy habits and an active lifestyle for girls, ages 8 - 12, through innovative health education and wellness programs. Two examples: "Celebrate You!" days and training programs which include eight weeks of nutrition, self-esteem, and fitness activites culminating in a 3.1 mile walk/run event.

These photos are from a 5K run, sponsored by the non-profit organization Girls on the Run of Southeastern Michigan. This fall, rowers Jordan Peek and Lori Gordon coached girls, ages 8 - 13, over eight weeks as they learned about health, nutrition, and fitness and prepared to run their own 5K race on November 5, 2006.

On February 19th, 2007, Michigan Rowing took part in a special day, "Celebrate You!," organized by Girls on the Run of Southeastern Michigan. It was a terrific event, in which 200 girls, ages 8 - 13, got moving as they learned about things including healthy eating -- and how to erg! Michigan Rowing head coach Mark Rothstein, his spouse (and Michigan professor) Alisse Portnoy, and volunteer coach Karen Smyte had fun introducing so many girls to the indoor side of the sport.
