Academics at Michigan

The University of Michigan is ranked tenth in the United States overall for undergraduate education among all colleges and universities, according to the 2005 Washington Monthly College Guide. In 2006, U.S. News and World Report ranked the University of Michigan as tied for second place among all public colleges and universities. Quite simply, the University of Michigan provides its undergraduates with one of the best and most-respected university educations in the world.

At Michigan, undergraduates are encouraged to explore what this world-renowned university has to offer -- and to develop paths that take advantage of the wonderful richness available at Michigan while appreciating and supporting their own more individual academic interests and goals. Michigan student-athletes have the opportunity to work closely with academic counselors in the Athletic Department's Academic Success Program as they navigate all that is Michigan, which, coupled with priority course registration and many other resources available to student-athletes, contributes to a rewarding, satisfying, and very widely respected achievement: earning a degree from the University of Michigan.

A great way to begin to learn more about the more than 200 degree programs offered by 12 undergraduate schools and colleges at the University of Michigan is to check out some of the majors Michigan Rowers have selected -- everything from Physical Education to Political Science, Statistics to Spanish, Nursing to Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. As you suvey the list, keep in mind that thirty-three Michigan Rowers were honored with Academic Achievement Awards this spring.

Part of the culture at Michigan is to take advantage of experiential learning programs, be they internships and co-ops (announced through the Career Center, the Alumni Office, most majors, and in the Athletic Department, among other places), undergraduate research opportunities, learning communities, or service learning courses (Michigan's Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program, Learning Communities, and Service Learning Programs are ranked by U.S. News and World Report as #1, #2, and #4 in the United States, respectively, among all colleges and universities).

There also are innovative interdisciplinary programs, such as for example the Program on Intergroup Relations, a social justice education program, and interdisciplinary courses for non-science majors who nonetheless are interested in biology and health care offered through the Life Sciences at Michigan program.

Perhaps you're one of the many Michigan undergraduates interested in going to law, medical, or business school after you graduate? You'll have great support, including through Michigan's Pre-Professional Advising in the College of Literature Science and the Arts, and also the division of the University's Career Center especially for undergraduates interested in medical, health, and law schools after graduation. The University of Michigan has one of the largest pre-professional student populations in the United States: 34% of our undergraduates go on to law, medical, or graduate school. Michigan alumni have earned law and medical degress from the top law and medical schools in the world, including the University of Michigan's own Medical School and Law School.

Is an Honors Program your thing? Honors Programs are available at the college level and also once you've declared a major. For example, take a look at the Honors Program in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts -- as well honors programs in departments such as Biology, Economics, English, History, Nursing, Psychology, and Spanish.

Of the 5,399 first-year students who enrolled at Michigan in 2006, 28% had an unweighted high school grade point average of 4.0 and 52% had a 3.9 GPA or higher. The middle 50th percentile of the admitted class had ACT composite scores of 27-31 and an SAT total of 1900-2160. Advanced Placement and/or International Baccaulaureate credit was granted to more than 3000 new freshmen.
