Student Panels
All student panels will be held in the Wolverine Room, MU
In 2007-2008, the Professional Development Committee developed a series of student panels. These proved to be the sessions that were most valuable and well received. As a result we will be offering a series of student panels again this year. First Who, Then What, our theme for this year, is connected to the book Good To Great by Jim Collins. In essence, in order to provide effective and meaningful services and programs for and with our students, we need to know as much as we can about their lives, their uniqueness and their experiences.

"Detroit: Alive and Kicking Still:"
Boy, does the D still get a bad rap! Yes, severe hits with the auto industry, our challenging school system, and media attention focused on the city council have made Detroit seem as if it's in a chaotic state...BUT Detroit is growing. It is the center of the state's emerging film industry––growing from 2M to 125M in revenues in one year. In addition, nearly 10 public and private foundations are supporting: 1) neighborhood initiatives (which are a magnet for young artists of all types from hip hop to goth), 2) a groundswell of urban gardens and food systems transformation, 3) planned US Social Forum to be held in 2010, 4) Allied Media International Conference in 2009, and 5) the emergence of art and humanities as vibrant forces in community development throughout many Detroit neighborhoods.
To show you how Detroit is meeting these endeavors, the tour will provide experiences in the rejuvenated Eastern Market area and a walk through the Dequindre Street Cut from Eastern Market to the new and exciting Riverfront Esplanade. We'll view southwest Detroit's new and controversial Ambassador Bridge developments, visit the new Detroit artist neighborhoods, and Gleaners Community Food Bank. Free Lunch will be provided in Mexican Town with a walk over to the bakery!
The tour bus will arrive in front of the Michigan Union at 9am promptly and return at 4pm to the Union.

Student Affairs Research Symposium
The Division of Student Affairs Research Roundtable at the University of Michigan is pleased to announce calls for presentations and roundtables for the Sixth Annual Student Affairs Research Symposium: Making Sense of the Information. The Student Affairs Research Symposium invites presentations from staff, students, and faculty nationwide on topics related to issues of theory to practice in our work with students. We strive to build a true dialogue around the application of theory to practice, and the ways that practice shapes theory. More specific information on the symposium and registration will be available next spring.
