Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities

 

"The Englishman, wherever he went, could not avoid seeing real blacks on the city streets. Certainly, wherever he looked up, the chances were that he would be faced with the painted image of a black. A city like London...was 'swamped' by images of blacks" (93).
