Fever

Although we would hope that your fever was brought on by the glory of a new romance, we suspect that you would not have traveled all the way here unless you thought your condition was serious. Fevers are the continued increase in the circulation of the blood and like those pesky Head-Achs, can attack at anytime.

Let us assess your condition to see if you have a fever, or if it really is just the longing you have for the D'elmont or Emma in your life.

Symptoms:

Upon recommendation of the text we use at TPIH, our staff looks for nine symptoms in order to assess a fever.

First, one of our staff will take your pulse to see if it has heightened. (22) Then we will ask you about whether you are feeling exceptionally warm or if you have any constant pains in your body. (23) We will also look for difficulty breathing, dryness of the tongue and see if you have a big appetite, since fevers are usually accompanied by an insatiable thirst as well as hunger. (24)

The other symptoms we want to keep a careful watch on are convulsion or inflamed muscles because their presence can indicate other ailments, or drowsiness because it could indicate corrupted blood. (25)

You may be wondering how this happened to you?

Do not fear. Contracting a fever is not always a sign of unfavorable behavior. For fevers are caused by both things that are out of your control, such as catching a cold or having stymied perspiration, and things that are under your power such as heavy drinking, overeating and anger. (26) No matter the cause, all fevers form when the quantity or motion of blood is lessened in quality. (27)

Treatments:

Thankfully the treatments we use at TPIH are so effective some of our colleagues think that more than 200 years from now doctors will treat their patients with the same methods.

fever

According to the medical texts we work from, if the fever is an ephemera, a fever which only lasts one or two days, we recommend rest, drinking plenty of liquids and abstinence.

For patients with depressed fevers, however, we serve our famous chicken broth and even a small amount of white wine. (28) If patients have slow fevers and are plagued by sleepiness, we will serve our special blend of house coffee. For all fevers, we serve our special tea to help assuage patients severe thirst. Tea and cyder whey make excellent drinks especially in inflammatory fevers in which white wine cannot be used. (29) Agents to induce vomiting in patients that feel nausea are also available. We have found that patients who experience nausea simultaneously with a fever will not begin to recuperate until the nausea is ameliorated. (30)
