Post-Master of Social Work Fellowship (MSW)
Learning Supports

Post-MSW Seminar

This seminar will meet bi-weekly during the fall and winter terms, and monthly during the spring/summer terms. Various topics will be addressed including:

  • Approaches to clinical issues and brief therapy
  • Professional development such as current topics in Clinical Social Work in University Counseling Centers and job search/career
  • Supervision
  • Attendance at and follow–up discussion of meetings (Social Work, University Hospital Clinics, etc)

Post-MSW Fellowship Specialization and Mentoring

Post-MSW fellows will allocate an average of 6-8 hours per week to the pursuit of their area of specialization (administration, assessment, clinical research, or community outreach.) Each post-MSW fellow will have a staff mentor with specific skills, interests and experiences in the area of specialization chosen by the Post–MSW. As with all mentoring relationships, this may take a variety of forms. This specialization time may also include study for licensure and other professional development activities.

Supervision

Two hours per week of individual supervision are provided throughout the year, with opportunities for adjunct supervision as needed. Post–MSWs have input into whether the supervisor changes or remains the same throughout the year.

Additional Learning Supports

Orientation: The post-MSW fellowship year begins with orientation activities designed to introduce CAPS, our various service delivery areas, and to establish expectations for individual post-MSW specialization. Training to review crisis assessment/intervention and emergency procedures is provided. Time is also set aside to meet staff and interns, to initiate supervisory and mentoring relationships, and for logistics such as setting up computer and email systems and settling into office spaces.

Assessment Seminar: Three hours weekly in September, with additional training possible at mid-year or during the spring/summer. Post-MSWs will learn CAPS protocols for assessing alcohol and other drug use, eating patterns, and learning problems.

Clinical Team: One hour per week of peer supervision is provided through participation in clinical teams with all professional staff.

Eating Disorders Case Conference: 1 hour monthly (optional).

Eating Issues Network: 2 hours monthly; case consultation and outreach planning with CAPS, Housing and University Health Service staff (optional).

Staff Meetings: Two hours weekly with full-time interns and permanent staff; includes administrative issues and staff development.

Substance Abuse Education Network: Two hours monthly; outreach planning with staff from across the campus (optional).

The Big Ten Counseling Center Conference: Post-MSW fellows are encouraged to participate in this annual winter conference. Participation is generally funded by CAPS.

Supervision: Post-MSWs will have the opportunity to provide individual clinical supervision as well as supervise intern group co-facilitators, depending on interest, agency need and staff resources.

Seminar Facilitation: Opportunities are available for post-MSWs to present in a variety of intern seminars, depending on interest, agency need and experience. In the spring/summer term, post-MSWs may have the opportunity to co-facilitate a training seminar.
