Modified Straight Pool Rules / Format

Played like 14.1 continuous. Each player has his own table; you are not competing head-to-head with another team. You are instead trying to pocket as many balls as possible in a set number of innings.

The shooter continues shooting after the initial break, whether he makes a ball or not. Balls pocketed on the break count toward your total for that inning. Failure to pocket a ball on the break, however, is considered a miss (end of inning). This encourages an open break, not a traditional straight pool break.

There must be at least two referee/scorekeeper from opposing teams at the shooting team's table. All teams are invited and encouraged to score other schools' straight pool matches.

Each player is entitled to two coaching time-outs. Time-outs must be called by the player, not by anyone else on the team. One coach must be designated; you may not confer with the entire team.

Each member of the team gets 10 turns at the table; run as many balls as you can run without missing.

When you miss the tenth time, you are finished. Your inning totals are tallied up, and that's your individual score for the Straight Pool.

Scratch is a loss of turn (end of inning), and any balls pocketed on that shot do not count; illegally pocketed balls are spotted. The player then takes cue ball in hand behind the head string. If there is only one ball and it is behind the head string, it can be spotted (creating a full rack for the breakout).

You must call your intended pocket. If you pocket a ball in the wrong pocket, the point does not count, and the illegally pocketed ball will be spotted. If you pocket a ball legally and simultaneously pocket other balls, those points DO count.

If you fail to contact a rail after contacting an object ball, it is simply a loss of turn. Hint: you can sacrifice your inning to put yourself in better position for the next shot.

After all four players have had their 10 innings, the team with the most points is the winner of the Straight Pool competition.

Top finishers will be awarded points for their team, toward cumulative team standings:

8-Ball Rules / Format

Double elimination bracket, using BCA league play format.

Random draw for which team plays which.

Each player gets one coaching time-out per game. Time-outs must be called by the player, not by anyone else on the team. One coach must be designated; you may not confer with the entire team.

Each match will be played using a modified version of the BCA league format for 4X4 players (Click here to see the form). This means member of a team plays one game against every member of the opposing team. It is highly unlikely, but possible, that after 16 games there is a tie. If so, there will be a sudden death playoff - a single game of 8-ball. Each team will choose its lone representative to play this game; the players will lag for the break.

Top finishers will be awarded points for their team, toward cumulative team standings:

1st.................... points tba for 2010

Run rack from your break ..................... 10 bonus points
8-ball on the break (without scratching)...... 25 bonus points

8-Ball Tie Breaker (adopted for 2010 tournament)

  • Each team must pick its best player for a single race to 2.
    • Lag for first break
    • Alternate break
    • Winner of Race to 2 wins the match for their team.

9-Ball Scotch Doubles Rules / Format

Double elimination, race to 5 until field is narrowed to the final 8 teams. From there on, it will be race to 7. Finals will be a single race to 11.

Lag for the first break; after that, alternate breaks.

If player A wins the game, player B will break the next time their team breaks. (Alternation continues from game to game).

Each team gets a single time-out per game. Either player can call the time-out.

Except for the time-out, partners may not speak to each other during matches.

When one team takes its time-out, the opposing team does not get a time out as well (unless they choose to use their time-out simultaneously).

The chart will be seeded so that twosomes won't play their school's other twosome in the first round.

BCA 9-ball rules will be used. www.bca-pool.com

If a team has a fifth player (an alternate), that person may be substituted in but must complete the rest of that match.

Top twosomes will be awarded points for their school team, toward cumulative team standings:

1st.................... points tba for 2010
2nd....................points tba for 2010
3rd.................... points tba for 2010
4th....................points tba for 2010
5th/6th..............points tba for 2010
7th/8th.............. points tba for 2010

POINT SYSTEM IS BEING RESTRUCTURED FOR 2010; POINTS WILL BE AWARDED TO TOP 50% IN EACH EVENT.

Bonus points will be awarded for the team, toward overall team standings (not toward the individual event):

Run rack from your break ..................... 10 bonus points
Run rack from opponent's fruitless break..... 5 bonus points
9-ball on the break ........................... 5 bonus points
(No points if you break in the 9 and simultaneously foul)

Combos and caroms do not count for bonus points as a "Break and Run," except an 8-9 combination. This was unanimously voted by Captains and Coaches in 2006.

In the event that a pair wins the Scotch 9-ball, but two pairs from another team finish high enough to exceed the points earned by the winning pair, prizes will be awarded as follows:

  • Trophy will be awarded to the winning pair.
  • Team medals will be awarded to the team with the highest points.
  • In the event that there is a tie (for example, one pair wins the tournament for 300 points, but the other pair from their team does not earn points; two pairs from another team earn 100 and 200 points for a total of 300), the trophy and medals will both be awarded to the winning pair.
