ACUI Intercollegiate Recreation
What is ACUI?
ACUI stands for Association of College Unions International. It is a professional organization that provides services, programs, and activities for students enrolled at colleges and universities nationwide. It also serves as a network for college professionals to share ideas and resources for campus programming. The annual Recreation tournament is one of the many student-focused programs sponsored by ACUI every year. Learn more about ACUI at www.acui.org.

When is the Regional Championship?
The Regional Championships are generally held in late February.
What are the events?
Intercollegiate 9-Ball (pool)
Co-ed Doubles Bowling
Intercollegiate Table Tennis
Chess
Poker (Texas Hold 'Em)
Video Games (Halo, Guitar Hero)
What happens if I win the Regional Championship?
If you are skilled and lucky enough (hey, there's always a little bit of luck in any competition!) to win the regional championship, you may proceed to International Competition, depending on the event.
1st- and 2nd-place finishers in all events will receive regional and local recognition, a gold/silver medal, and a gift card. Plus, the regional tournaments are loads of fun, hanging out and competing with students from other schools in our area.
For select events, winners qualify to go to an international championship. These events are 9-Ball (Men's and Women's) and Table Tennis (Men's and Women's).
How much will this cost?
If you plan ahead, it could be as cheap as ZERO BUCKS!
The Billiards Room advises clubs and weekly tournaments for 9-Ball, Chess, Table Tennis, Bowling, and Poker. Our parent department, University Unions Arts & Programs (UUAP), holds video game tournaments throughout the school year, and ACUI reps will be selected from those tournaments. For Bowling, Table Tennis, and Chess, those respective clubs are given the responsibility of selecting the best players to represent Unversity of Michigan. Pool, Euchre, and Poker representatives are determined by the monthly Tournament of Champions (TOC) series.
For Bowling Club information, contact incoming president Rob Appel at rgappel@umich.edu.
For Table Tennis club information, e-mail the club officers at ttofficers1@umich.edu.
For Chess, e-mail the club officers at ChessClubBoard@umich.edu.
You may join as many clubs and play in as many tournaments as you wish; however, you may not be able to play in all of those events at regionals, since some of them take place at the same time.
Top finishers will generally win the cost of their entry for the Regional tournament. For some events, only the winner will qualify; for others, the Top 4 will qualify. This depends on the event and the number of entries. Generally, for every 8 entries in each event, one top finisher will be chosen. So if 16 people enter the Chess tournament, for example, the 1st and 2nd-place winners will advance to regional competition.
If money is not your primary concern, but you just want the opportunity to compete, there might be a chance to do this. For each event, Unversity of Michigan can send 10 participants. However, the Billiards Room's budget (your sole sponsor) is not large enough to send 10 participants per event. So by request, additional participants may go to the regional tournament at their own expense. The cost to enter is approximately $35.00 plus travel and meal expenses, which are on your own.
What do I need to do RIGHT NOW?
Become involved in the recreation clubs and programs! There are clubs for Billiards, Bowling, Table Tennis, and Chess. There are weekly / monthly programs (tournaments) for Pool, and Poker. To get on any one of these lists, find the contact information on the Billiards main page.
