PARTICIPANTSPrincipal Investigators / CuratorsSally Howell Sally Howell is a Ph. D. Candidate in the Program in American Culture at the University of Michigan and Assistant Professor of History at UM-Dearborn. From 1987-1995 she was Cultural Arts Director for the Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Services (ACCESS) in Dearborn, Michigan. Howell is the producer of Tales from Arab Detroit (1995), an award-winning documentary film, and curator of A Community between Two Worlds: Arab Americans in Greater Detroit (1995-2000). Her essays have appeared in Visual Anthropology, Diaspora, and Anthropological Quarterly, and in the edited volumes Arab Detroit: From Margin to Mainstream (2000) and Being and Belonging: Ethnography in American Muslim and Middle Eastern Populations after 9/11 (2008). Howell is a principal investigator on the Detroit Arab American Study and on the Building Islam in Detroit research and exhibition project. Her dissertation, Global Islam/Local Muslims: Inventing the American Mosque in Detroit, will be completed in 2008. Andrew Shryock Andrew Shryock is Arthur F. Thurnau Professor of Anthropology at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He is the author of Nationalism and the Genealogical Imagination: Oral History and Textual Authority in Tribal Jordan (1997); editor, with Nabeel Abraham, of Arab Detroit: From Margin to Mainstream (2000); and editor of Off Stage/On Display: Intimacy and Ethnography in the Age of Public Culture (2004). Shryock has engaged in numerous public projects in Detroit, from film production to museum exhibitions and curriculum design. He currently edits the journal Comparative Studies in Society and History and directs the Islamic Studies Initiative at the University of Michigan.
