ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE 2009 ANNUAL MEETING

The 2009 meeting of the American Oriental Society, Western Branch, will take place in Los Angeles, California, on October 16-17, 2009, co-sponsored by the UCLA Center for Chinese Studies, Department of Asian Languages and Cultures, and the Division of Humanities.  All AOS members are cordially invited and enthusiastically encouraged to attend, to organize panels, and to present papers.*  We recommend registering as early as you can.  Please send the enclosed registration form, payment, and your abstract if giving a paper, by Tuesday, September 1st, to:

*YOU MUST BE A MEMBER OF THE AMERICAN ORIENTAL SOCIETY TO PRESENT A PAPER AT THE CONFERENCE.  Membership information is available in all issues of the Journal of the American Oriental Society as well as at the American Oriental Society website: http://www.umich.edu/~aos .

Accepted papers will be given 15-20 minutes for presentation.  You should receive the final program by October 1st.

MEETING ARRANGEMENTS:

All sessions will be held in the Humanities Conference Room, Room 316, Royce Hall, on the UCLA campus.  Registration will take place on Friday and Saturday mornings.

RECEPTION:

There will be an informal reception on Friday evening at the conclusion of the day’s program in the Herbert Morris Room, Room 306, Royce Hall.  All are welcome.

CONFERENCE BANQUET:

The annual meeting banquet will take place Saturday evening (place to be determined).  All participants are invited to hear the Presidential Address by Professor Robert Joe Cutter at the banquet.

ACCOMMODATIONS:

Unfortunately, we have not been able to secure a block of rooms or a conference rate for our meeting.  There are several small hotels (35-40 rooms) adjacent to the UCLA campus and within a 15-minute walk to the on-campus conference venue.  You can reserve rooms directly (the regular room rates are listed below; discounted rates may also be available through internet deals).  Be sure to book your reservations well in advance, since there are no rooms specifically reserved for the WBAOS conference.

The Royal Palace and Claremont Hotels are next to each other, Hilgard House about two blocks away.  None have restaurant facilities, but the hotels are within a few blocks of Westwood Village, which has many restaurant options.  We will also arrange shuttle van service from the hotel area to the conference venue on Friday and Saturday mornings.

TRAVEL FROM LOS ANGELES INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (LAX):

You have several options:

LAX FlyAway Bus: The bargain option ($5 one-way).  Board FlyAway bus for “Westwood” at arrivals level of any LAX terminal under green “FlyAway, Buses, and Long Distance Van” signs.  Leaves every half-hour on the hour and half-hour with direct service to Westwood, with drop-off at UCLA Parking Structure 32.  About 3-4 blocks’ walk to any of the above hotels (a map will be posted on the conference website).  For return on Sunday, bus departs every hour on the hour for LAX.  For more information, see http://www.lawa.org/welcome_LAX.aspx?id=292#3
