ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE 2008 ANNUAL MEETING

The 2008 meeting of the American Oriental Society, Western Branch, will take place in Portland, Oregon, on October 24-25, 2008, co-sponsored by Portland State University’s Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures.  All AOS members are cordially invited and enthusiastically encouraged to attend, to organize panels, and to present papers.* This year we recommend registering as early as you can, because a possible Portland State faculty strike could affect logistics.  Please send the enclosed registration form, payment, and your abstract if giving a paper, by Monday, September 15th  at the latest, to:

RECEPTION:

There will be an informal reception on Friday evening at The Old Church, a Portland landmark, or on the Portland State campus (both sites are up the street from the hotel).  All are welcome.

CONFERENCE BANQUET:

The annual meeting banquet will take place Saturday evening at the Heathman Hotel.  All participants are invited to hear an address by a distinguished visiting scholar (details to be announced).

INFORMATION UPDATE:

Further details and adjustments to times and meeting places will be posted on the AOS Website (http://www.umich.edu/~aos).  Please check the website before the conference.  If there is a pre-conference softball game, it will also be announced on the website.

ACCOMODATIONS:

The Mark Spencer Hotel is located downtown, a short walk from Powell’s Books, Pioneer Courthouse Square, the Art Museum, and (for those who want a change of pace) the Crystal Ballroom.  Still within walking distance, or accessible by free street-car or light rail, are the Suzhou Garden, the riverfront, or the Portland State Library if you need to do last-minute paper research:

*YOU MUST BE A MEMBER OF THE AMERICAN ORIENTAL SOCIETY TO PRESENT A PAPER AT THE CONFERENCE.  Membership information is available in all issues of the Journal of the American Oriental Society as well as at the American Oriental Society website: http://www.umich.edu/~aos.
