Our goals

The AIChE Mentorship program hosts social and informative events for underclassmen interested in ChE. The goals of the program are to connect underclassmen with resources to further their knowledge about the different career paths for chemical engineers and to foster a sense of community within the department.

The student mentors are chemical engineering juniors and seniors who have some type of experience in one of the following areas:

1. Petroleum and Energy Resources

2. Biotechnical Products and Pharmaceuticals

3. Plastics and Materials

4. Food and Consumer Products

5. 5.Research/PhD studies
   

6. 6.Undecided
   

How it works

Interested underclassmen (freshmen and sophomores) sign up as mentees by filling out the questionnaire given out on the second day of ChE 230 (also below). They choose their first and/or second career preference and are matched with the corresponding mentor.

The AIChE mentors serve as a resource for their mentees by making themselves available to answer questions and setting up informative events with companies or professors related to their area of interest. Mentors have some type of experience within their assigned area of interest, whether it’s through an internship, research experience, or just be being a ChE student!

The Mentorship Chairs arrange monthly social events throughout the year. These social events are aimed to build community within the ChE department and advertise the Mentorship program.

How to sign up

If you are already registered for ChE 230 in the Fall 2014 term, then do not worry – we will come to you! The AIChE Mentorship Co-Chairs will hand out the Mentee Questionnaire in the first week of class. From there, we will add you to the mentee emailing lists.

If you are not taking ChE 230 in Fall 2014, please email aichementorship@umich.edu with your completed Mentee Questionnaire.
