Amnesty International advocates for the rights of individuals in the world.  This article discusses a present day case of Latinos experiencing racial profiling in West Chicago.  It reveals the wrongful doing of police when issuing ordinances and warrants.

 

Arboleda, A., Senger, J.M., Villarruel, F., Walker, N. Lost Opportunities: The Reality of Latinos in the U.S. Criminal Justice System. Washington DC: National Council of La Raza. 2004.

In the report Lost Opportunities: The Reality of Latinos in the Criminal Justice System, the National Council for La Raza (NCLR) finds that Latinos are grossly over represented in the U.S. prison population.  The report contends that Latinos account for 31% of those incarcerated in the U.S. while they only constitute 13% of the total U.S. population.  The report is comprehensive and looks at the Latino experience in the criminal justice system all the way from arrest to sentencing, placing a special emphasis on the Latino youth experience.

This brief published by the NCLR helps to put into perspective the problems that Latinos face with the criminal justice system.  It gives statistics taken from both the Texas Criminal Justice System as well as the National Criminal Justice System.  The brief also offers suggestions on how to fix some of the problems.

This article discusses the methods and practices used to discriminate against Latinos.  It also gives an overview of Lost Opportunities and cites many statistics of Latinos in the US Justice System.

Provides an in depth analysis of The Young Lords Party that chronicles the start of the party to when the party dissolved.  Discusses several legal injustices that the Young Lords experienced which provides a strong basis for the historical section of this website.

The journal article “Diversity in Policing: Latino Representation in Law Enforcement”, explores ways to combat the inequities Latinos face in the criminal justice system.  It focuses on the relationship between the Latino community and law enforcement.  It suggests having more Latinos in police departments would greatly improve this relationship, subsequently improving the Latino experience in the criminal justice system.

 About Time: An Anthology of California Prison Writing is a compilation of poems and writings from both prisoners and their family members.  It was put together by the Vacaville Prison Literacy Workshop in California.  The book serves to offer insight into the inner most thoughts of the prisoners as well as help them express their feelings and develop their writing skills.

The book Raulsalinas and the Jail Machine: My Weapon is my Pen: Selected Writings by Salinas explores the 12 years he spent in four of the U.S.’s most brutal prisons.  It looks at the prison experience from the voice of a Latino man.

Discusses the unjust arrest of several Latinos wrongfully accused of the Sleepy Lagoon Murder.   Details the lack of evidence involved in the Sleepy Lagoon trial and discusses the release of the 12 men who were wrongfully imprisoned for the murder. Provides several pictures of the men involved in the case.

Urbina, Martin G. “Language Barriers in the Wisconsin Court System: The Latino/a Experience”.  Journal of Ethnicity in Criminal Justice, no. 2 (2005). 91. 

This article discusses the specific issues that many Latinos face in the Wisconsin court system.  It goes into detail about the language barrier in the courts and how it greatly affects the Latinos standing trail there.
