    The U-M Solar Car Team has won the American Solar Challenge for the fifth consecutive time. Michigan raced its car, Quantum, against 22 other teams of college students in the 1,700-mile race, which happens every other year on a different course.

  • New lightweight metals institute

    A new $148 million American Lightweight Materials Manufacturing Innovation Institute plans to open this fall in the city of Detroit. This public-private partnership is co-led by U-M, the Ohio-based manufacturing technology nonprofit EWI and The Ohio State University.

  • Blooming agave

    The rare blooming of the American agave plant at U-M Matthaei Botanical Gardens is underway. The more-than-80-year-old plant, which has grown so tall that it pokes through conservatory's ceiling, will bloom and then die, but not before leaving behind some genetically identical "pups."
